Goth Challenge - Day 18 to 25

Worst hair experience.

When I was a kid, my mum used to brush my hair and she was never gentle. I have an overly sensitive scalp so every day it was agony. My mum got sick of my crying so she made me cut all of my hair off. I was already teased constantly at school as it was and after that it increased 10 fold because I looked revolting. I was already about a foot taller than everyone else, had massive glasses because my mum used my nanna's old frames to save money and now I had a disgusting haircut. Primary school wasn't all that pleasent.

Luckily enough when I hit high school I suddenly realised I hated everyone and didn't really care what they thought. I'd instead get extremely angry that skanky, dumb bitches at school thought they had the right to make my life hell. So eventually I stopped holding in my anger and I guess that's how I got the nickname 'the scary bitch' in senior years. Buuuut I've already gone off track so I'm not going into this any more :P

Share beauty advise and take a photo of your make up.

Well I'm not wearing any make up so I can't take a photo but I suppose I can share some beauty advice.

-How about giving the twirls and swirls on the sides of your face a rest for a while, hey?

-Sometimes wearing bright lipstick and eyeshadow together looks a little bit too much.

-Fake nails look like shit, and I fear if I say this those who wear them will scratch my eyes out; but yeah...They look cheap

If you could dye your hair any colour what would it be?

Greeeeen! :D I've wanted green hair for a long time and I love it. I also think one day I would like to try pure white long hair.

What body mod do you have or have you considered?

I have an industrial, both lobes, high cartilage piercing on the opposite side to the industrial (dunno the proper name for that) and septum.

In the past I have considered a labret, medusa and munroe but I'm unsure about getting any more facial piercings. Currently I'm considering getting my conch or tragus done, perhaps in celebration if I get this new job I'm going for next week in Melbz.

If you could attend any Goth event what would it be?

Whitby and WGT! I plan to attend both at some time during my life. I have a few mates that attend WGT every year, so hopefully I can go with them perhaps!

Your favourite artist or photographer.

Kate O'Brien is my favourite photographer.

Czech her out.

Name the best websites for Goths.

The Ultimate Goth Guide! :D I adore Amy, she's such a sweetie (and hopefully she gets her computer up and running again soon!).

Did you ever consider leaving the subculture?

I don't think it's possible, because it would mean leaving myself; and I'm not quite sure how to go about that :P But for a long time I didn't associate with other members of the subculture, and sometimes I wonder about my decision to start trying to make friends that share the love of the gothic subculture because there's a little too much drama involved in it for me...However I'm pretty good at avoiding the drama!

The Goth Challenge - Day 17

Your favourite Goth brand

I think it might be fairly obvious from my day 15 post that Gallery Serpentine is my favourite goth brand :D I've even been given a nickname by the Sydney store owner ^_^ She refers to me as the 'Gorgeous Green Princess'. It's really delightful for me as an avid fan of the brand!

The Goth Challenge - Day 16

What's the most casual you've ever dressed?

I used to go to exams, go to dinner at college and visit Mcdonalds in my pjs and bathrobe all the time when I was at uni :P

The Goth Challenge - Day 15

(I skipped 14 'cause all of my DIYs are disasters and I'm embarrassed to show them :P)

Your favourite or most expensive item in your wardrobe.

Geez, that's a hard one!

I can't say I have a single favourite (although I'm pretty smitten with my Matrix leggings I received in the mail yesterday!)

I might be able to narrow it down to...5 items maybe :P

  • Black Milk Matrix Leggings
  • Gallery Serpentine Eliza shirt
  • Gallery Serpentine Steampunk stripe corset
  • Lip Service Green Stripe Jeans
  • Berserk Hoodie

So my most expensive item would probably be my Black viletta skirt from Gallery Serpentine. It was $390. Although, as soon as I finish paying for it; my green Antoinette skirt will take the #1 spot. It's $520 O.O

Oh and today I'd like to wish a very Happy Birthday to Kitty ^_^ <3

The Goth Challenge - Day 13

What was your first band t-shirt?

A red Cradle of Filth shirt that was much too large for me :p This is the best picture I could find of it:

Can you see my natural eyebrows here? No? Don't worry, it's because they practically don't exist :P

I try not to wear my band t-shirts too much nowdays, but I still find myself reaching for them on casual days...

I have since collected a few more

I own:

2xCradle of Filth shirts
3xDeathstars Shirts
1xEmilie Autumn Shirt
1xRob Zombie Shirt
2xPiggy D Shirts
1xShiv-R Shirt
1xPink Rabbit Shirt

I think that's all :P

The Goth Challenge - Day 12

What's your gothic inspiration?

Long before this Green Fairy emerged from her tomboy shell, she always kept a strong love of anything Victoriana close to her black (and green!) little heart.

And I still do! It doesn't have to be goth in any facet, but anything from that fundementally-romantic era of human history incites such wistful longing in me and slight regret that I had to be born about a hundred and fifty years too late.

That's not to say that I'm not ridiculously grateful for flushing toilets, sanitary pads and women's suffrage!

Furthermore I don't know if this one needs o be said, but I guess I'm gonna say it anyway;

The Green Fairy

Malevolent, mysterious and green-hued; everything I aim for.

As for individuals...Well, where better to start then..

In the beginning, goth created ...

Old school zombie flick music videos, sexy boys wearing make up, corny lyrics and bouncy tunes I like to call rockhorrorpop. What more could a budding babybat want I ask you?

Damn this man is talented, and so handsome. I'd toss my 'no-marriage-for-me' policy out the window in an instant for this man.

Ciewen Noor - Jenni Wimmerstedt (model/stylist)

It took me the longest time to choose a picture of Jenni for this post, because I'm currently so in love with her look. She's so amazing...Most of my extravagant make up is inspired by her...

Robert Browning (poet)

I'm of the opinion that if you've never read any Robert Browning, you haven't lived. My favourites and two of his most famous works are 'The Laboratory' and 'Porphyria's Lover'. Read them. Now.

Adora Batbrat (model/personality/stylist/designer)

It's pretty much at that stage where whether or not you like the lovely Mrs Batbrat, if you're goth you're gonna have to have heard of her at one stage or another...

The Goth Challenge - Day 11

Is Goth a lifestyle for you?

Um...Yes? I guess so anyway...

It's not like this green hair is a wig that I take off when I go outside or anything :P I love being goth, it's the only constant in my life that never lets me down (other than Ellie the elephant that is <3) At this point in my life I can't see myself changing for anything.

The Goth Challenge - Day 10

What do you hate and love about the subculture?

Love:

-The fashion and style (duh :p)
-Standing out from the crowd
-The tendency for other goths to greet you like you've met before (even though you haven't)
-The 'family' atmosphere I feel around others interested in the subculture
-The random compliments from strangers
-The double-takes
- The fact that the dancing at goth clubs/events is so much cooler/fun than at normal clubs
-That corniness is cool ^_^

Hate:

-Dealing with the people who feel the need to harrass you because of how you look
-The elitism
- The fact that I can never find anything I'm looking for in my clothes pile because everything is black :P
-That the pretty things cost so much :(
-Having to deal with sleazy guys who hit on you, thinking you're easy because you're goth
-The nasty snickering when people walk past you
-Being treated like a lesser being or not being taken seriously in society because you're goth

That's about all I can think of for now...

In other news here's a pic of my from yesterday in my new Elfs from Blackmilk. Sorry the pic is so bad. They're a beautiful green velvet, so soft...Mmmmmm

I realised this afternoon how freakin' close my birthday is (only 8 sleeps away >.<). I seem to get less and less excited about it every year that passes. This birthday is probably gonna suck because none of my friends are home so I'll probably spend it getting drunk alone packing for Melbourne.

I also seriously think I need rehab for my Blackmilk addiction... I bought two new pairs this week already! big blood splatters and Cathedrals. The blood splatters will probably look awful on me because they're white, but I figure I could wear some ripped black pants over them and they'd make an awesome zombie outfit addition (I LOVE dressing up as a zombie!). Plus if I really hate them I'm sure I'll have no issues passing them on to someone who missed out seeing as all these styles are being discontinued. I'm sad that I still haven't gotten confirmation that my Matrixes have been posted. I'm so worried I'm going to get an email saying something along the lines of 'Sorry, we over estimated how many pairs we had." :S I guess all I can do is wait and hope!

On another note I also received my custom green tights from Tentacle Threads today. The colour is freakin' AMAZING. I will hopefully get some nice pics of them this weekend.

Anyway, think that's about all for tonight.

Over and out!

The Goth Challenge - Day 8

What's your worst and best experience with non-Goths?

I've had multiple bad experiences some of which I'm sure have been mentioned before. The majority of my bad experiences have either been at the pub or around them (not that alcohol is an excuse!). I once was leaving a pub and two men approached me from behind and started abusing me and groping me. I told them to go away and fuck off and whatever but they persevered all the while two cops sitting in a car about 10 metres away sat watching and laughing.

I had another experience where this guy followed myself and a few friends whilst we were walking to a pub. He kept yelling at me how he wanted to fuck me but that he'd 'have to do it from behind so he didn't have to look at my hideous face'.

Furthermore once I was standing in line to get into a pub and a guy started abusing me about how disgusting I was. I told him to fuck off and he grabbed his crotch and told me to 'suck it'. I declined, saying I didn't bring the required microscope required to see it with me to the pub. The drunken idiot them responded with something along the lines of 'Yeah you'd need a big [microscope] one.' My friend whom I was standing with at the time and I looked at one another and burst out laughing. I guess he failed to understand that generally the bigger the microscope; the smaller the object to be examined. :P It's a bit of a running joke between my group of friends and I. :P

Other than those stand outs, mostly I just get called names by strangers and have obscenities yelled at me. It's mainly just like...Roll your eyes and move on. I'll never understand why people feel the need to do that.

I don't think there's been any stand outs as far as good experiences go. I was once out on the town gothed up when I was living in Canberra and it was a pretty great night. I had countless people compliment me and it made me feel fantastic; it was such a change. I was walking into town and I had a guy quiz me on how I get my hair so high and asked me where I'd been all my life. :P Another (really good looking) boy with a half shaved head told me I was the most exciting person he'd ever met :P Fun times...

I also have a memory from when I was a babybat where I was walking around my local town in my massive stompy Demonia wickeds. A whole family stopped me and told me how much they loved my boots because they were all massive KISS fans :P It was really cute. I also really like the random comments I get from little kids whenever I go to the supermarket.

Anyway that's about all I can think of for now.

Oh and I got my new Black Milks today, Black Dragon Snots and Elfs! Unfortunately the Elfs don't fit as well as my others because obviously the velvet doesn't stretch as well, but I feel it's motivation to lose some weight!

The Goth Challenge - Day 7

(I'm doing two today because I didn't do one yesterday.)

Ten of your favourite goth bands

These won't all be specifically 'goth' as such (as I'm not really into that many strictly 'goth' bands), but rather ones that are associated with/have elements of the subculture.

In no particular order;

1. Ashbury Heights

2. Marilyn Manson

3. Emilie Autumn

4. Covenant

5. The 69 Eyes

6. Voltaire

7. And One

8. Shiv-R

9. Apocalyptica

10. VNV Nation

All images sourced from Google

Edit: I realised after posting this I didn't really take the time to think this through, just listed the first bands that came to mind. I don't wanna change the above so I'll just a few more that I love just as much:

God Module, Aesthetic Perfection, Gothminister, Velvet Acid Christ, Combichrist, Detroit Diesel, Snog, Repear, Psyclon Nine, Neuroticfish, Nachtmahr, HIM, Freakangel, Grendel, Angelspit, Dawn of Ashes, Diary of Dreams, Jesus on Extasy, Leaves' Eyes, Malice Mizer, London After Midnight, Dope Stars Inc., Kidney Thieves, Deathstars (?goth?), Lennon Murphy

The Goth Challenge - Day 6

(I skipped day 5 because there aren't any goth bands in my local area.)

Hand write your favourite lyric and take a picture.

I did Coma White by Marilyn Manson.

The Goth Challenge - Day 4

Name a stereotype or cliché you can relate to.

Well, number one would have to be...Ta da!

1. Absinthe

I mean, I am the Green Fairy after all ;) However I'm kind'a the biggest hypercrite when it comes to Absinthe. See, I love the concept and romanticism behind the stuff...It's green it comes in pretty bottles, it makes you see fairies, it has a rather complex drinking style, some awesome historical figures used to drink it, it's extremely alcoholic...I could go on..

But see, I don't actually like the taste of aniseed. *headdesk* I wish I did, and I continue to bombard myself with the flavour whenever and wherever I can (I keep my absinthe lipbalm and candies with me at all times) but unfortunately my body has yet to conform to my wishes :(

2. I can be counted on to be in love the antagonist of most stories..

Need I say more?

3. Vampires

Don't have the same fervour for them now as I used to, (I blame Twilight for ruining everything) there was a time when this little Green Fairy was obsessed with those little blood suckers. I've read pretty much anything Anne Rice has written (multiple times) and I even dissected 'The Vampire Lestat' as part of one of my texts for the HSC (along with a Cradle of Filth song, poetry by Byron, Browning and Keats and a Star Trek film - I'm sure they regret giving me the option of picking my own texts :P) I can also quote the entirety of 'The Queen of the Damned' film...word for freakin' word. >.<

I only ever drank grape juice when I was a kid because I felt like I was emulating my mother who was always drinking (very gross dry) red wines, but when this vampire obsession began it changed from me emulating my mother to me emulating my beloved Lestat De Lioncourt.

But seriously, what's not to love? The vampires I immersed myself in looked as though they'd minutes before been carved from the purest white marble, their crimson lips stained with the blood of their last victim, eyes that shone with the knowledge of eras past and adorning their Adonis-like statues were the finest fashions of a time when people really knew what style was.

You can understand why I might have been a wee bit smitten when I found creatures that haunted the night and encompassed everything I'd ever found pleasant in history.

But now - we have the Stephanie Meyer vampires who have shattered my childhood idols and almost sicken me when I think about how much time I devoted to adoring them.

Thanks Stephanie Meyer...Bitch..

4. Speaking of Poetry...

Yeah, I love poetry from the 19th century. It's pretty much name it and I've read everything they've ever written. I studied the Romantics in ext. English at school and have never looked back. I also took poetry at uni and so I was lucky enough to score me a textbook with Bible-esque tissue paper thin pages full of all kinds of famous poets' works that's about a brick and a half thick. It is my poetry bible. I could probably just get rid of all my other books on the subject now.

Here are some of the poets I keep close to my heart:

Byron
Keats
Robert Browning
Frost
Tennyson
Blake
Wordsworth
Shelley

Annddd I could go on forever but I'll cap it there.

5. Spiders...and more

Although I've never been one to adorn myself with spiders or bats or what not in my wardrobe (I find it a bit tacky), I absolutely loooveee the creatures in real life. I was a bit of a cruel child, the type you'd find sitting outside on the back veranda at our old house catching bugs and putting them in spider webs just so I could see the illustrious creatures emerge from their little dwellings to devour the innocent little bugs. I seem to have this equal feeling of fascination and terror when I see an exotic spider.

I have very vivid memories as a child when my parents took me to a spider exhibition at a museum in Sydney (I think they wanted me to be able to learn about them but without the chance I'd be bitten like at home...plus I was obsessed with Alice Cooper's 'The Black Widow' song at this time). It was probably one of the best times of my childhood life (only rivalled by another exhibition they took me to that was Star Trek themed :D) aaaand I got to hold a tarantula! It was freakin' awesome.

And not to mention snakes...I used to pretend I could speak parseltongue :P Plus we've had several pet snakes in my lifetime (RIP Salazar). I've never been afraid of them one iota and I've known how to bandage a snake bite wound from about the age of 8.

6. Braaaiiiiinnnzzzz...Err, I mean Zombies..

I love Zombies. I love zombie films, be they gorefests, b-graders, realistic rage-virus versions, Shaun of the Dead-esque or what. I love the idea of painting myself up to be skeletal, dousing myself in fake blood and running around trying to eat peoples' brains. I played (and was the second last to die!) in the first ever Australian game of Humans v.s Zombies and I just don't know how else to express my love of the little blighters.

7. Halloween

I've never participated in it, but I love the idea. It's the one thing I wish Australia would rip off from the rest of the world.

8. Satanism and Witchcraft

Well considering that the true meaning behind Satanism is humanity attempting to reach equal power with God; hell yeah I'm a Satanist. Because no one's god is more important than the life of another person...I mean, no one has ever murdered anyone in my name (that I know of :p)...

And as for witchcraft, well muggles I got my letter when I was 11 so nerrr :P *blows raspberry*

(I hope I'm not going to get abused for this one :P)

...

9. Brian Warner

I love Marilyn Manson, his music is fantastic (I like all of it even his most recent albums) and he's hilarious. He does everything just for the sake of getting publicity (because let's face it, it's getting harder and harder to do something outlandish nowadays) and the public plays right into his hands by telling him off for it. Any publicity is good publicity, duh.

I mean this isn't so much the case any more, because well...Mr Manson isn't in his prime an ymore, but yeah...Funny man. Very talented. Bit of a child. Love it.

10. Morbid...stuff

I read criminal files for a living practically and I spend my free time on sites like People You'll See In Hell. I love gorey details. Sometimes I worry about it, but mostly I don't :P

Hope this has been interesting at least a little, I'm home from work today because my back pain is so bad it made me puke :( I love my blog for distracting me <3

Also, woo only 3 weeks till I move to the big city! :D

The Goth Challenge - Day 3

When did you come out the Goth closet?

Um, I don't think I ever was in this 'goth closet'; it's not like I showed up to a G.A. meeting and said "My name's Stephanie Julian and I'm a goth." :p It just kind'a...happened..

..Wow I'm not really good at answering these questions, am I?

The Goth Challenge - Day 2

Share photos and experiences from your Baby Bat days.

Well, I don't think I need to show you any more photos, as you can see them all here.

The Goth Challenge - Day 1

Well I spotted this challenge on Juliet's Lace (as did a lot of my fellow bloggers I see) and thought I'd take part! :)

How did you come across the subculture?

So, I probably have mentioned this before; if so I'm sorry for the repetition!

I became quite self conscious when I first started reading a lot of blogs from other gothie types around the world, this being because I didn't really get into the goth subculture until a lot later in my life than a lot of you lovelies. Although I did recognise elements in my childhood that a lot of my now goth friends describe as being part of the subculture (which made me feel a bit better :p). I was always obsessed with anything fantasy, horror or sci fi as a kid; I loved to dress up and I was never interested in being the 'princess' of the story.

But apart from that I wasn't really aware of the subculture to be perfectly honest, that was until I met a boy at a friend's birthday party when I was 16. He was a metal head and was generally interested in gothic...stuff :P

Needless to say we started dating not long after and he often listened to bands like Cradle of Filth, Nightwish and Wednesday 13. After we broke up I started listening to the aforementioned groups (as although I was interested in them immediantly, I didn't want to appear as though I was just into them because he was) as well as started trawling the internet for other bands that I might like. And so began my metal head phase...

This lasted for a few years until I started discovering bands that tended to be more melodic and well...goth :p I found I preferred these over the general cacophonous-ness of a lot of metal bands out there.

Furthermore I had worn black quite a lot from a young age because I'd always been quite self conscious about being fat and well...Black is slimming :p Plus other colours were a bit too girlie for me, and I was a bit of a tomboy.

In any case, the more gothic bands I discovered, the more exposure I got to the subculture and the older I got the more money I had to start investing in garments, music and literature involved in the gothic world.

And I think that about concludes my story of coming into goth :)

The Green Fairy

xx

Oh and p.s. Unfortunately I didn;t win a place in Black Milk's recent photo comp BUT I did find out today that I've scored myself a pair of Matrix leggings! I'm sooo happy as they're the style I've wanted for agesssss but they were release when I was on hiatus from BM for spending too much money >.> <.<
